Mercury Day Magic: Planetary Powers Career Spell

Goddess Moon is full and bright.
Magical anticipation quivers.
Gather your tools and hang on tight.
This spell will give you joyful shivers!

Tomorrow’s full moon shines in the constellation of Leo which is ruled by the Sun. It will be Thursday, the day of Jupiter. Jupiter’s jovial powers and the Sun’s brilliant energy lend themselves perfectly to magic involving joy and abundance. What better time to work magic for finding that perfect career you’ve been dreaming about?

When I wrote this spell in January 2016, I was in the last semester of my undergraduate year. I was (accidentally) pursuing a degree in sociology. In order to graduate, I had to complete an internship at a nonprofit organization. I was deeply worried about it. I’m shy, for one thing, so getting out there into my community in person was daunting and scary. On top of that, I would have to ask the people in charge of the nonprofit to do a little paperwork to support my internship, which would involve advocating for myself in a way I was unused to. As the cherry on top, because I have albinism and am legally blind, transportation is a big issue. I have to Uber it wherever I go, (the bus in my neighborhood is as scary as scary gets). Uber rides add up fast. I was barely getting by as it was. How was I ever going to make this work?

By asking for divine help. That’s how.

Inspired by the Powers of Jupiter that will be just as strong tomorrow as they were on the Thursday I wrote this spell eighteen years ago, I designed this magic to call upon all the Planetary Powers to aid me in my internship endeavor and, since I would already be at the altar anyway, and have my magical juices flowing, I thought I’d throw in a request to make a little money at it too. Why not?

At this time, I had just recently become more deeply connected to Hermes Mercury, so I was sure to include him in the spell and ask him to use his masterful skill as messenger to carry my request to the heavens and the fulfillment back to me. Hermes Mercury is also the god of currency, commerce, and trade, so asking for a little money as a bonus was right up his alley.

I cast this spell on a chilly night in January, outside in my backyard. While I live deep in suburbia, the moonlight made the mundane bushes and yard art and flowerpots all seem to crackle with magical potential. I peered into the night sky. I raised the wand a friend made for me from a pyracantha bush (fire thorn). I raised my athame—a little silver hunting knife I bought at Big 5. I drew the planetary energies into myself through the wand then projected them into my request through the athame. After I finished, I grounded my energy into the soil of a young pomegranate tree I was trying to grow. I went inside to further ground and celebrate the magical working with a Hostess cupcake and a shot of vanilla vodka. Oh so fancy! (Certainly, the swirl on the cupcake and filling are divinely lunar.)

Within a matter of days, I found an internship with NOAH—the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation. I was to design their resources website so the internship did not involve expensive transport. They were more than happy to do the necessary paperwork. Although I did not make any money directly from that internship, the skills I developed designing their resources website have been invaluable in every business endeavor I have pursued since then and are a lovely bright feather in my resume. All that I wrote my advance gratitude for and charged with Planetary Power came to pass. Just like that. Magic works. All we have to do is get out there and work it—making sure to be grateful and respectful every step of the way.

Now, eight years later, I am no longer in need of an internship, but I am starting my adventure building Temple Mercury into something I hope will one day do tremendous good in the world and provide employment for me and other Pagans dedicated to our mission. My sister is also seeking out her next career adventure and working to support herself by living her dreams, (you can find her wonderfully witty site, Camelot Labs, here). My best friend too is looking for a career change as her current work environment has gone stale. So, I thought, why not revisit this incredibly effective spell I wrote for an internship and adapt it to finding a lucrative and, more importantly, soul-fulfilling career?

That’s exactly what I’ve done here.

In putting this together for Temple Mercury, I was shocked to see how many steps there are. Don’t let that deter you. Essentially, it boils down to these basic magical acts:

  • Be grateful.
  • Write the gratitude.
  • Charge the gratitude.
  • Joyfully celebrate the gratitude.
  • Have passionate faith in the power of gratitude.
  • Receive that for which you are already grateful.
  • Joyfully celebrate your gratitude again.

“Joy, Gratitude, and Passionate Faith” are not merely the watchwords of Temple Mercury, they are an extremely powerful formula for magical success and a life filled with spiritual delights.

Let’s get to work:

Planetary Powers New Career Spell

Timing of Spell

This spell is best performed during a waxing or full moon, on a Thursday (day of Jupiter), in the hour of Jupiter, (tomorrow that will be between 7:28pm-8:36pm Pacific Time).

Casting the Spell

FIRST AND FOREMOST: Make an offering of money or time to a charity that helps people in the field in which you hope to receive. Because we are performing magic for a new career, try to find a charity that helps people find employment or write resumes. Perhaps there is a charity that helps ex-convicts or the homeless find employment. Never ever ask without giving first. Never ever approach the Gods or Powers empty-handed.

What You’ll Need

  • Paper
  • Envelope
  • Green Inkpen
  • Prosperity Powder (see recipe below)
  • White Spell or Taper Candle
  • Wand
  • Athame (magical knife) (If you don’t have a wand or athame, it is perfectly acceptable just to use your outstretched hands)
  • Wine, Liquor, or Juice
  • Cake, Soft Cookie, or Sweet Bread

Working

Write what you want in a career on a piece of paper. (Do you have magical stationery? Perhaps you should. It’s a wonderful excuse to buy stationery—as if we need an excuse.)

In green ink, write what you want as if you are expressing gratitude for something you already have. Write it as a gratitude to each Planetary Power involved in manifesting it. For example:

  • I am so grateful to the Powers of the Sun for guiding me to a career that lights up my mind.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of the Moon for guiding me to a career that fulfills me emotionally.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of Mercury that all the communications in the process of finding and obtaining this career went smoothly.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of Venus for guiding me to a career that makes my heart sing.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of Mother Earth for guiding me to a career in which I feel grounded and at home.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of Mars for guiding me to a career in which I feel empowered to be my best, most courageous self.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of Jupiter for guiding me to a career that pays in great abundance.
  • I am so grateful to the Powers of Saturn for guiding me to a career where I can pursue my true ambitions.

After each gratitude, write the alchemical symbol for the planet.

Make Prosperity Powder and mentally charge it with green light.

Add Prosperity Powder to an envelope.

Address the envelope this way:

To the Planetary Powers
c/o Hermes Mercury, Divine Messenger

Seal your gratitude list in the envelope with intentional spit. (In other words, think of adding your physical body power to the envelope as you lick it.)

Write, stick, or wax your personal seal on it. (Do you have a magical sigil or sealing wax? Another good reason to buy stuff we want to buy anyway.),

Take the envelope and white spell candle outside during the full or waxing moon.

Place the envelope and candle on a clean surface that is out in the open.

Light the candle for Hestia, the Divine Spark, First and Last.

Hold your wand in your left hand and raise it up to the sky to the east, asking that the wisdom of the Stars be present and flow through you.

Hold the athame (knife) in your right hand and raise it up to the sky, facing west, and ask that the courage and protection of your ancestors be with you.

Raise your hands—wand in the left hand, knife in the right—and call the planets’ Powers into yourself in whatever words come to you at the time. (Spontaneous prayer is most powerful.) The energy will flow into you through the wand in your left hand (your receptive hand), then flow through you and collect in the knife held in your right hand, (your projective hand).

After you invoke each planet, collecting its energy through you and into the athame, touch the envelope with the athame point and recite this incantation:

By ink and pen the dye is cast
My new career will come
Will be a boon to heart and mind
And bring a tidy sum

When finished, hold your athame and wand aloft again and thank the planets and stars. Heartily thank Hermes Mercury, the Divine Messenger, for carrying your message into the heavens.

Return the unused energy to the planets and stars via holding the wand and athame up to the sky and projecting your energy into it.

Thank your ancestors for adding their power and protection.

Kneel down and place your hands on the earth. Breathe any excess energy out into it, that it may nourish the soil and anything that may live or grow in it. DON’T SKIP THIS STEP. Not grounding after a spell can lead to serious, albeit often hilarious, backfires.

Blow out the candle or let it burn out on its own. If you blow it out, thank Hestia again as she is First and Last.

Take the envelope inside.

Eat a piece of cake, a soft cookie, or bread. Drink a glass of wine, a shot of liquor, or a glass of good juice. This is for further grounding and a celebration of happy and successful magic.

Place the envelope in your journal for the day and keep it there until what’s in it comes to pass.

When you find yourself in your new, happy career, repeat this process on the dark moon, offering thanks to the planets, ancestors, and Hermes Mercury.

Burn the envelope.

Scatter the ashes in the wind.

Prosperity Powder

A pinch each of:

  • Thyme
  • Basil
  • Ginger
  • Cloves
  • Allspice
  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon

or

  • Thyme
  • Basil
  • Pumpkin pie spice

What magic do you have up your sleeve for this full moon? Did you try this spell? How did it go? Leave a comment and let me know.

  1. Thank you so much for writing these lovely instructions. This is going to be a big help for tomorrow night. I’m very excited to take it for a spin. Now I’m going to go look for a green pen!
